Rain & Snow Showers Today Then Turning Colder

We have some snow showers around the area right now in manhattan and points north and another quick system moving through the area today that will bring us some ight snow if you live north of I-287 and west of I-87 in Rockland with some moderate to sometimes heavy snow in Orange and Putnam counties and points north as the system passes overhead around lunchtime.

Look for a slushy trace to inch along the coast up to 3" in Rockland / Westchester and even higher amounts of 3-6" in the normally colder suburbs. Highs will be in the upper 20s N&W with mid 30s across much of our area.

In NYC, for Long Island and south of I-78 in NJ expect some mixed precip with very light icing (Trace to less than .03" ice) possible especially in NJ along the line where precipitation will start as snow, mix with and then change to freezing rain and then to rain before going back to some snow showers this afternoon and tapering off between 4 and 6 PM depending on where you live from West to East.

Temperatures will rise this morning especially in those south and east locations from the teens and low 20s this mornings up to about freezing north and west and all the way up to close to 40 on the south shore of LI and coastal NJ around 1PM. Temps will fall back to freezing or below by 10PM causing some very slippery travel for the evening commute in many areas as wet areas re-freeze this evening and especially overnight.

I am a little concerned with the icing not because of the unimpressive models showing a bit of mixed precip but rather we have a very cold ground with snowpack and areas that were hard to get 100% blacktop in the suburbs combined with the wet weather during the day and then cold air moving in overnight. There will definately be some slippery sidewalks and roads where they haven't yet been treated. So if you haven't already I recommend putting down some salt and sand today in the early afternoon after most of the precip stops. This will prevent a very slippery Wednesday morning.

And then the big story not only for our area but much of the country will be the bitterly cold air coming down from the arctic deep into the central plains and all the way into OK and TX. We will get a glancing blow as you look at the 10 day forecast with highs not above freezing for 5 consecutive days starting on Friday but luckily we will only get a glancing blow. Let's check out International Falls, MN where it is currently -5 and won't crack 0 for the foreseeable future. It looks like Monday the high will finally get over into the positive and reach a balmy high of 8 degrees. Well at least it's sunny.

Back home we have a few more threats for wintery weather that I am tracking. There is a chance coming up next Sunday (3 weeks in a row?) which currently looks like today's light snow showers or possibly mixed with rain, and then again on Tue into Thu next week with a more significant storm but possibly again a mix of rain and snow. It's too early on that one but I will keep an eye on it.

And if you are tired of all of this snow, remember that Spring is just around the corner. The sun is setting later (5:15 today) and spring training for baseball is right around the corner. Just 6 more days until pitchers and catchers report and baseball officially starts April 1 which is just 51 days away!
