Severe Ice Threat Tue, Prepare Now

This is an extremely active winter weather pattern with three storms in the next six days. Tonight snow should break out across the area and then around in the wee hours Sunday especially in coastal areas look for temperatures to rise above freezing and the snow to change to a mix of sleet and freezing rain. Some areas just south and east of NYC will see colder temperatures and freezing rain which will make driving treacherous early tomorrow morning. Rockland and Northern Westchester should stay cold enough for all snow with light accumulations of around an inch.

This weak storm is just an appetizer. The main event will be on Tuesday with a much stronger system moving up from the Ohio Valley and spreading record breaking cold in the upper midwest and record snow of up to 12 " in east TX, OK and the MS valley. The forecast is a bit uncertain at this stage but I would expect rain along eastern Long Island through Nassau and southern New Jersey starting as a mix of some wintry precipitation before turning to all rain. Inland there may be dangerous and heavy icing along a fairly large area of the lower Hudson Valley with heavy snow north and west of a line stretching from about Scranton to Kingston into Manchester NH. Expect a fairly large area where the mixed precipitation falls as freezing rain or ice which may create extremely hazardous travel conditions Tuesday into Tuesday afternoon. Now is the time to prepare if you live in these areas as travel will be dangerous and power outages possible.

I am also watching a winter storm for Thursday which looks to potentially be colder and snowier.
