Severe Ice Storm Possible - Monticello, Kingston

Well this has been an interesting winter. And while no one likes an ice storm, it wouldn't be the 2020-21 winter season without one, right?

If you live near Kingston or Monticello, please take the threat on Tuesday very seriously. I would avoid travel between 7PM Monday and 7PM Tuesday if at all possible in Ulster and Sullivan counties. Anywhere north of I-84 at some point late Mon into Tue there will be treacherous travel conditions due to freezing rain in these areas. I would avoid I-87 north of say Poughkeepsie and 17 and 84 west of Middletown if you can.

This will be a high impact event and my focus is on NY but look below at the extent of the ice storm.

If there is one silver lining to this storm its that in our region, the heaviest icing will be N&W of the major population centers (I-95 cities) and SE of the second largest population centers (Albany and Finger Lakes/Buffalo/Roch). Syracuse and Rochester should be mostly snow with most of the freezing precip mixing in after the ground is snow covered and likewise Binghamton and Albany will get some mixed precip but I think it falls mostly as snow at least initially and they don't have an extended period of icing like some places like Kingston, Monticello, Catskill, Hudson, or Poughkeepsie.

Ice Accumulation (15Z mon - 18Z tue / 10AM Mon - 1PM Tue):

Precipitation by Type (09Z mon - 15Z tue / 4AM Mon - 11AM Tue):

Bottom line is stay off the roads if you can Tuesday, especially early in the morning. I think there will be people headed up to ski in the Poconos and Catskills and it will not be safe to travel there during the day on Tuesday.
